BOOKS:
info on nutrition in general, read....
** = specifically vegetarian
.
** "Idiots Guide to Being Vegetarian"
.
** "The Vegan Sourcebook" by Stepaniak MD for those who want to be a vegetarian vegan, this is an essential.
.
"Idiots Guide to Eating Smart"  Great book for beginners.  It is not a vegetarian book, but has lots of great info.  Last time I looked, it was available on the web, but last I checked, it is no longer carried by Borders Books in stores, but should be, it is a great Beginners Level Book on Health.  Borders says its no longer available, but it is on the web thru the Idiots Guide web site.
.
"Consumers Dictionary to FOOD ADDITIVES" by Winter (an absolute Must for everyone).  This book tells you what all those additives on product labels actually are. Try looking up "Benzene Acetaldehyde" in any other dictionary (two words, impossible in many cases), but you can with this book.  This book tells you if it is animal derivative, or cancer causing, etc.  You would be surprised. I got some Korean BarBQ Sauce from Smiths Food King which contained some scientific names which turned out to be from meat, and which caused cancer in laboratory test animals. So I returned it (unopened) showing the clerk the quote from the book.  Whole Foods (and Wild Oats) carries this book.
.
"Nutrition for Dummies" (excellent resource, the food chart in back is a Must, and the rest of the book is great).
.
"Idiots Guide to Vitamins & Minerals" by Pressman (very good)
.
"The Real Vitamin & Mineral Book" by Dr Shari Lieberman (see my Vitamin & Mineral chart, I have posted her Optimum Daily Intake for all the vitamins and minerals (most health experts will admit to you, that the RDI and RDA (recommended daily intake or allowance), as specified by the US Government is only the bare minimum set for survival, and is greatly lacking in many cases from the actual Ideal amount which you should be getting. But what is the right amount? Shari Lieberman has researched this and found the Optimum amounts.  In the books she specifies case studies done by experts.
.
"The pH Miracle" by Young & Young (excellent).  pH is one of the most important things in health.  After reading this book, you will probably never drink a soda again (its not what you might think, its not that we are against drinking something nice tasting, or un-natural, its that the pH of sodas are deadly to your body).  This is not a vegetarian book, yet the food charts do show strong evidence that most meats and dairy products are low pH reactive (and thus show Why meats and dairy products do so much damage).  See for yourself.
.
"The Complete Guide to Health & Nutrition: A Sourcebook for a Healthier Life" by GARY NULL The most detailed, comprehensive, coherent book I have seen on "Health".  Very complex, and very detailed.  Gary Null is one of the top experts (he also has books on Juicing, a healthy hobby, and other various books)
.
"Eat Right 4 Your Type" by Dr Peter J D'Adamo
READERS BEWARE:
I have found Dr D'Adamo quite correct, that certain blood types do better with different foods, however, even though he is right about some things, he exaggerates other things, and is just way off base on other things, he advises meat for type O as they need more protein (in a later sequel, Cook Right 4 Your Type, he demands that type O's MUST eat meat (were so sorry for D'Adamo, many top experts have really put him down, I have retained my copy of Eat Right 4 Your Type, but threw his Cook Right 4 Your Type in the trash, its not worthy of donating to the library), I am type O but get my extra protein from Soy, a much healthier source (and so do many other type O's. D'Adamo claims that type O's should consume all the caustic low pH foods (which make people ill and give me canker sores), he obviously is not a type O himself (he reserves most of the glorious foods for type B, I wonder if he is a type B?, must be). On the other hand, I have read and heard from other reliable sources that Type O persons should avoid Peanuts (and Cauliflower), as they inhibit Thyroid function in type O persons, so he has some good things in there too.  So although this is an excellent resource in many respects, reader beware, someone needs to sort out the whole thing, rehash the whole subject, as D'Adamo may be famous, and has a great collection of tidbits, but which ones are right and which are wrong needs to be reviewed and revised by someone more qualified (perhaps an entire team of specialists would do better).  One way or the other, both the American Cancer Society and the Mayo Clinic say that everyone should eat little or no meat (and type O's are the vast majority, so that must include type O persons too).  Were so sorry D'Adamo.
.
** Books by Marilyn Diamond (listed M Diamond) & Harvey Diamond.   "Fit for Life" and other titles.
.
"Spontaneous Healing" by Andrew Weil MD
.
"Eating Well for Optimum Health" by Weil MD EXCELLENT a Must.  This book is one of my very favorites.  You have all seen the health doctor with the big white beard?  That's him.  I think he was in my Taxi Cab a couple of years ago, but I was too embarrassed to ask if it was really him. By the way his endorsement of John Robbins "Diet for a New America" is on the cover of that book.

"Diet for a New America"  by John Robbins (on the cover) says "Diet for a New America...should be read by everyone interested in healthy living" - Andrew Weil, M.D.  It was years before I picked up a copy (I was unemployed and underemployed for quite some time, as my former educated field of electronics is now done outside the USA, and thus I could not afford a copy of it, but years later, the evidence and info is still essential, great book. I will have to get his more recent book(s?)).
.
** "You Can Save the Animals" by Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals http://www.peta.org which is a great web site, and the PETA people are great people, I have met some of the people who work for this great non-profit organization, and they are so very nice, very helpful.  All their controversial rabble-rousing has very good intent, they are not trying to drag you or anyone down, they are just trying to open your eyes and make a better world, for Animals and You. They also have great advise for pet owners, such as never let cats out of the house (they get run over, etc).  http://www.peta.org
.
** "Slaughter House" daily violations against US Dept of Agriculture regulations

"The Merck Manual: of medical information"  is The Standard medical refrence in the medical field.  I have the "Home Edition" and its available on CD too (I'd love to get that).  A MUST.

Schaums Outline Series: by McGraw Hill, various books, various subjects, various authors.  Sold in all University Bookstores and Jr. College Bookstores (you don't have to be a student to purchase, but you might not be able to use your credit card unless your a student), Borders Books carries them, and they have a web site.   I have many on various subjects including Microbiology, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Chemistry, etc, etc.  These are a Most Valuable asset to any book shelf collection.

Vegan Outreach: Why Vegan?
a good resource

NEW: Vegan OK Products by PETA Oreos, Ritz Crackers, Wheat Thins, etc

Lists of animal free Alcohol for vegetarians, vegans, and anyone who wants it http://www.barnivore.com/

PREVIOUSLY: I mistakenly listed Sutter Home White Zinfandel on this and other pages, and only later found the error and even then forgot that I had it listed on another page too. The mistake was taken from another web site, which probably did not differentiate the difference between Sutter Home's Zinfandel and White Zinfandel, which are different, so always check Barnivore.com as things change. J&B used to be Vegan OK, but is no longer (or maybe it was an error too?). So always check the current standings. Jack Daniels is vegan OK but they now have a version with Honey which of course is not vegan ok (the bees will sting you to remind you). Also: Becks Dark may not be Vegan? AND Jack Daniels makes some other products which you should check first at Barnivore.com

PETA is an Animal Rights Organization which I am a member of; as I believe that we humans are animals too, and I have seen that when people do things to animals, it comes right back to you (God made us all and loves us all), what goes around, comes around, we can live in harmony with nature, or fight it ("don't piss into the wind" -old expression regarding going against nature), your choice, your karma, you can make a difference

HEALTH & FITNESS PIONEER JACK LA LANNE
I used to watch his exercise show on TV when I was a kid www.jacklalanne.com (Warning: non-vegan info).   I used to watch this guy on TV as a kid, he was telling everyone long ago "you've got to get your Thiamine, Riboflavin ......" etc, etc.  Now I talk just like him (just not as strong as him, this guy used to pull a bunch of boats all tied to a rope he gripped with his mouth, while swimming he would tow the boats, to show how strong he is). However HE PROBABLY WAS NOT A VEGETARIAN (I think he might have eaten chicken, but am not certain? but other than that tried to eat healthy) .
